Serious side effects from Bontril are not common. As the body adjusts to the new medication, however, some individuals may experience some of the following effects for the first few days. Keep taking Bontril unless these problems become too bothersome:
- restlessness or having tremors
- nervousness or anxiety
- headache or dizziness
- insomnia
- dry mouth or an unpleasant taste in the mouth
- diarrhea or constipation
- impotence or changes in sex drive
- drowsiness
If symptoms last longer than a few days, call a doctor. The symptoms listed below are more serious. Stop taking Bontril and call a doctor if experiencing:
- allergic reaction (trouble breathing, hives, swelling of the throat, lips, tongue or face)
- increase in blood pressure
- irregular heartbeat
- hallucinations or confusion
Adjusting the dosage is usually enough to relieve or minimize Bontril's side effects.
